What type of poppy is illegal?

While it's true you can find many varieties of poppy meant to decorate your garden, the Papaver somniferum poppy is highly illegal to buy or grow. The DEA defines the entire plant, save for the seeds, as opium, and has placed it on Schedule II.

How do you identify a poppy?

Flowers. If you see fields of upward-facing, cup-shaped flowers with crepe paper-thin petals and bright colors of red, white, pink, or orange, chances are they could be poppies. Some varieties, such as Oriental poppy (Papaver orientale), have dark centers and dark spots at the base of the petals.

What kind of poppies make drugs?

The poppy plant, more specifically the opium poppy or Papaver somniferum, is used to produce opiates. Opiates have been used successfully to control pain, but they are also abused because of their mind-altering effects.
